Finding a way of working that supports both your professional ambitions and your personal wellbeing can feel like a distant goal in the legal world. Many solicitors and lawyers reach a point where they start craving more choice, more breathing space, and a career that adapts to the life they want to lead, not the other way around. That’s exactly why so many legal professionals are gravitating towards legal consultancy. It offers a way to stay committed to your clients and your craft without sacrificing time, balance or the freedom to make your own choices.
At Taylor Rose, our consultant programme was built with that vision in mind. We understand that your career isn’t just about billable hours or financial targets; it’s about feeling fulfilled, supported and trusted to work in a way that suits you. Our model gives you the space to grow, the flexibility to manage your time and the confidence of working with an established and respected legal brand. Whether you’re seeking autonomy, a more flexible lifestyle, or to reenergise your legal career, consulting puts you in control.
To reflect what this can mean in real terms, Emilie Hornby Consultant Solicitor shares her journey to becoming a consultant and creating a career that supports both her clients and work-life balance.
‘After years of training, working in private practice, networking, and everything in between, I came to realise that life is all about balance. Whether it’s family, friends, or even yourself! It’s important to find a balance that works for both you and your clients.
My decision to become a consultant was inspired by an old colleague and good friend. I saw through the ‘looking glass’ (an apt way to describe consultancy when it’s unfamiliar) and realised there’s always time to try something new, no matter how daunting it may seem.
To say it was an adjustment would be an understatement. At first, I needed time to settle into the role, and then I threw myself into meeting new people. I’ve never been one to shy away from picking up the phone, going out for coffees, or attending networking events solo, and that’s exactly how I built my wonderful client base.
One of the biggest changes for me has been learning to allow myself time and grace. I firmly believe that a happy solicitor makes for happy clients. I make myself available to my clients, and I am always happy to plan around their busy lives while also making time for my own personal life and family.
My grandfather used to say, “Nothing ventured, nothing gained.” And that would be my advice: if you’re considering a change and believe this path might be right for you, give it a go!’
Emilie’s story highlights something many legal professionals quietly recognise, fulfilment doesn’t have to come at the expense of success. Creating a career that aligns with your values and lifestyle is entirely possible, especially in a legal consultancy environment where you’re trusted to work in a way that suits you and your clients.
At Taylor Rose, we see how consultant solicitors and lawyers thrive when they have ownership over their work and flexibility in their day-to-day routine. Whether it’s spending more time with family, focusing on personal priorities or simply rediscovering a passion for the law, consultancy can open doors that traditional pathways may not.
If you’re currently weighing up a change, wondering how to make your career work better for you, or simply interested in exploring alternatives, you’re not alone. Many have been precisely where you are now, curious, cautious, and hopeful. And like Emilie, they’ve found that taking that first step can lead to a more satisfying and sustainable future.
When you’re supported by the right structure and people, your potential has room to grow. Your next chapter doesn’t have to be a leap into the unknown; it can simply be the moment you decide your career should work for you, not the other way around.
